Nothing much to report

You won't believe where I'm writing this...

I'm hammering this out on my Wii (thank you Opera) because my primary computer is busy with its anti-virus scan. Yes, it's shameful that I run it so infrequently, but given that a full scan takes over 20 hours, it's not sonething I can do every day anyway

The bitch is that I use HTML tags, and the input method is ill-adapted to the task, though I'm learning.

Monseur Grunchy es mort! Vivre l'Confetti Factorie!

I went out this 16-degree morning and bought myself a new shredder. The old one fit over a trash can and tookup to five sheets. The new one takes up to six, cuts up credit cards and ruins CDs and DVDs, and has its own bin.

And it microcuts! It'll reduce a single sheet of paper to 2400 little schnibbles, each smaller than a Tic-Tac™.

And the power switch and warning label have a cool blue LED glow, but now I'm just being a geek.

Then again, posting about it on LJ means the geekdom is pretty much fait accompli, non?

Out of bed, with no place to go

I have a vacation day today due to work being closed, and apart from the paper-destroying appliance, which I bought before 9 AM, I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do with the rest of my day.

As proof, I offer up the fact tgat I typed this up on a Wii.

How is playing internet flash games on your wii? Any you can recommend?

I'm thinking of springing for the browser, but haven't yet.

Flash games for the Wii I don't have much to do with; I already have an overabundance of games on disk that I barely have the motivation to play through. I do, however, keep a link to YouTube which comes in occasional handy. And I did play with Line Rider with it once, with browser version 1.0. It was troublesome for reasons other than the Flash not working.

Since it's Opera, it tries very hard to be a standards-compliant browser, even taking its "thin client" profile into account. Where it loses ground is quirks-mode rendering; ironically, any page sufficiently hacked up to be viewable in as many browsers as possible gives it the greatest fits.

Another place it loses ground is the keyboard; a long LJ post is a pain unless you have a Bluetooth keyboard to join up with your console. But for light browsing, FLV, and some games, it's suitable. It's an okay browser if for whatever reason your computer is tied up.

Since I was one of the beta seeds, I got mine free. It's now $5. If you already have money invested in the store, it's not a bad thing. The store is its own sticky issue, though, with credits-for-money being available in one set of increments and games-for-credits being available in a different, mostly incompatible set of increments.

And now that you've gotten me thinking Flash games, a quick Google search turned up a small plethora of hits for "Wii Flash Games", including collections at Albino Black Sheep, WiiPlayable, and WiiScape. Disclaimer: I've played none of them. But I'm going to start sampling them real soon.

What games do you have for yours so far? And dare I ask for a FC...?

FC?

I only have the basics at the moment, the sports games and the ones that come with a second controller. Got the Simpsons but traded it away after getting through it. I plan to get Super Mario World maybe in February or March.

FC = Friend Code. It's the unique 16-digit identifier which you can use to introduce your console to mine. Then we can allow our Miis to mingle, sending messages (some might call them email), sharing game data, etc. Online play is something they're saying we should have "eventually." Given that their earlier declared online strategy was a partnership with Evite, I'd say it's not one of their highest priorities.

As for other games, you should look most seriously at Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy, the hot (and highest rated) Nintendo properties.

I have Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and to get a sense of history with it, I found a copy of the original Metroid Prime for the GameCube. (The Wii will play GameCube games, if you have a controller.) I actually prefer the original more than the later Wii-specific release.

Also do look for Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree. It's got a total of 20 brain games, although you need to get sufficiently high scores on the first 15 at all difficulty levels to unlock the last 5. And though the Wii wasn't intended to be the graphic powerhouse the PS3 or XBox360 are, Geometry Wars: Galaxies still looks gorgeous. And you can't really go wrong with anything from the WarioWare series; Smooth Moves packs in a lot of fast, furious minigame action.

Sure. I'll FC you. Email me yours and I'll reply with mine (it's at home where I am not).

It's the mock-French. It adds a certain je ne sei quoi to everything.
